Winnipeg Home Renovations
1890's Historic Home

This historic home was restored to its original grandeur and beyond. |
|
 |
This home was built in 1895 and over the years, had undergone little by way of renovation. The new homeowners had loved this dwelling and park-like property for years and were thrilled to purchase it, under the condition that aspects of the original house were maintained. Extensive upgrading was needed as well as more living space. Architect Wins Bridgeman and interior designer Greg Palmer were hired to develop the new house plan: a 2 storey 3,000 square foot addition and complete restoration of the existing 1,800 square foot home. The design objective was to maintain a traditional look but provide state of the art amenities. The home was gutted and the original stone foundation stabilized and waterproofed. The new foundation consisted of concrete piles and grade beam that supported a glu-lam arch framework in a traditional Gambrel style. Expanded portico with matching balcony mimics the original but embraces 3 sides of the home. Architectural details - columns, ballustrades and moldings - recreate the home's former traditional style. Gables details were restored with cedar shingles and tyndall stone and reclaimed brick complete the exterior.

Much of the floor plan of the existing home was utilized in the renovation. The former living room was redeveloped an elegant den with a new gas fireplace and custom millwork. Stained glass panel hanging in the window is from the original house. |

The main staircase was completely rebuilt in reclaimed elm surrounded by natural slate flooring. |

The modest original kitchen was relocated into the new addition and significantly redesigned. The new kitchen is anchored by Legacy Originals' custom cabinetry. Features include natural stone counters by Carrara Tile, solid copper farmer's sink and backsplash, reclaimed elm flooring and unique ceiling bulkhead that includes 3 skylights which bathe the kitchen in natural light. |

The main floor of the addition is open concept and contains not only the kitchen but also a cozy sitting area with wood burning fireplace and custom millwork with concealed audiovisual system. |

A 2 storey vaulted space features the music area set against the original home's back wall restored in reclaimed brick. View of the music area highlights the bridge connecting the original second storey to the new master bedroom loft. Four skylights illuminate the glu-lam arches that support this vaulted space.

The remainder of the main floor open area features a more formal living room and dining room, both with a magnificent view of the park-like surroundings through the floor-to-ceiling windows by Paramount Glass.

A new mudroom with adjacent full bathroom provides a connection from the new attached garage to both the original house and the addition. The bathroom features a skylight, a low threshold shower, tile detailing and stunning copper sink.

This view from what was the original second floor master bedroom follows the glass and reclaimed elm bridge to the new master suite. The suite is framed by the wood glu-lams that make up the structure of the home. Floor-to-ceiling windows provide a panoramic view of the forest and river to the south while skylights provide more illumination. Patio doors lead out to the west-facing balcony. |
