Early 1900's Country Lodge
 |
|

This home was built in the early 1900s as an upscale country lodge and later converted into a private residence. The main entrance faced the riverside, as there had been no street when the lodge was constructed. Later a street was put it |
and a makeshift street side entrance created. The homeowners felt that a proper street side entrance was needed. As well, in spite of having formal dining and living areas, the homeowners felt the need for a less traditional and more accessible family space. The wish list also included a main floor laundry room and a second floor ensuite above the former attached garage. |
Sakiyama Construction gutted the unused attached garage was gutted, excavated and transformed into a main floor family room. Large windows replaced the garage doors. A contemporary fireplace with a limestone surround was constructed. |

A home entertainment centre was built and installed by Jake Klassen Cabinetry. Site finished oak hardwood flooring was extended from the kitchen into the new family space. |

The existing kitchen was opened to the new family room. |

This involved removal of a series of doors and a pre-existing servant's staircase that led upstairs. The space occupied by the latter was developed into a pantry. Complimentary cabinetry with granite countertop was installed both adjacent and opposite to the new basement entrance. |

The original back foyer was extremely small and had doors from the garage, outside, basement and kitchen, all within a few square feet. The street side entrance had no foundation, no insulation, poor windows and an unusable entry door. An existing den adjacent to this entrance had poor accessibility and was very cold in the winter, to the point of being unusable. The makeshift street side entrance was gutted and removed. A new front foyer with spacious coat closet and a main floor laundry replaced the poorly utilized den.

A new master bedroom ensuite was developed directly above the former garage, partially in newfound space created by removing the servants' stairway. This ensuite was finished with marble details in shower and vanity and mosaic floor tile in keeping with the era of the home. |
In addition to Sakiyama Construction, the homeowners hired Gerri L. Stemler, MAA (retired), FRAIC (retired) of Elm Street Design to develop this revised floor plan. Bev Zimmerman of Interior Dynamics provided interior design details. |
