1940s Cape Cod
The primary focus of this project was to provide increased living space as well as to modernize the home. The "shed" shaped section on the right side of the existing house (above left) was a

largely unused, poorly heated side entrance with utility staircase to the boiler room. Designer Greg Palmer (Palmer Interior Design) worked with the home owners to develop a floor plan that created a sunroom in the "shed" area adjoining a renovated kitchen. A feature of this plan was the use of box window cantilevers to create additional space as well as bringing much needed light into the home. Dining room and front entry way were also redesigned.
|

The utility staircase was removed and filled and the old chimney was eliminated. The original boiler heating system was replaced with a high efficiency unit. Note the new custom double hung wood windows, French doors, and exterior woodwork detailing designed by Sakiyama Construction.

The view from the dining room was greatly enhanced by the installation of a custom double hung window (right) with casing and sills that match those originally present. |

The sunroom created by the new floor plan provided a bright eating area as well as convenient main floor computer station. Note the new cork flooring - warm, easy-care, and comfortable.
|

The new kitchen featured millwork by Legacy Cabinets and granite counters. Note the increased cabinet and counter space provided by the box cantilevers. All appliances were replaced as well as new plumbing and electrical fixtures. |
